HowardCenter to Hold Vermont's First Curling Fundraiser: March 20, 2010, at Cairns Arena, with assistance from the Green Mountain Curling Club
-
Grab your brooms, form your 4-member team, and mark your calendars now for HowardCenter's First Annual "Curling Challenge.” The fundraiser will be held March 20 at the Cairns Arena in South Burlington.
The GMCC will provide an hour of instruction to participating teams of 4: the lead, the second, the vice, and the skip. The Club will also provide all the equipment needed: brooms, stones, and sliders to wear over your own footwear.
The day-long Curling Challenge, starting at 8 AM, will consist of 32 teams, with 8 teams able to play at a time. For the Challenge, teams will play an abbreviated game of two ends. (A regulation curling game has 8-10 "ends"; ends are comparable to innings in baseball.) The two teams earning the most points will compete in a championship game in the early evening.
“We are finding that people are truly excited about the prospect of curling. It’s a game that’s literally sweeping the country." says Gail Rosenberg, HowardCenter’s Development and Public Relations Manager. During the 2006 Olympics, curling events were watched by five million viewers, surpassing ice hockey and figure skating. Rosenberg said, "We’re hoping that the excitement generated by the curling competition in the 2010 Winter Olympics will carry over to this event.”
According to GMCC Board member Rich Dauphin, “This Challenge will give us the opportunity early in 2010 to promote this great sport that everyone can enjoy, while helping HowardCenter raise funds for the important work it does to help people in our community improve their lives.”
Teams will earn points by successfully getting stones closer to the center of the circles or “houses” than their opponents and also by having the most creative team names, among other fun criteria. GMCC members will judge curling-related criteria and another panel of distinguished individuals will judge the non-curling criteria.
The Green Mountain Curling Club is a charitable non-profit dedicated to promoting the sport of curling in the state of Vermont. More information about the Club can be found at its website at www.greenmountaincurlingclub.org
The Ice Barn is Chittenden County’s new home for curling, with a dedicated sheet available at all times. Their regulation rink will be available for all winter sports.
Promotion and registration for the event will begin in mid-November. For information, contact Gail Rosenberg at gailr@howardcenter.org or 488-6912.
