New Challenge Grant

Announcing a new challenge grant to improve client care through implementation of electronic health records

HowardCenter received a $300,000 challenge grant from a local foundation, the Vermont Foundation for Children and Families, to support our efforts to convert our outdated paper records system to Electronic Health Records.

EHRs will improve efficiency and help support our clients more quickly and more effectively. In addition to improving clients’ direct experiences with agency services, EHRs will improve efficiency, eliminate errors, and save money, time, and environmental resources. Medication management will be safer and more efficient. An EHR reduces the possibility of losing client charts and missing data, and eliminates the confusion of illegible entries. And, since EHRs require clinicians to record important data before they close a document, important facts about a client will not get buried within case notes.

Technology cannot solve every problem. But in this case, it is a critical factor in providing state-of-the-art care. We are committed to providing the best client care possible and to providing the finest organization at which to work.

To help us meet the $300,000 challenge, please click on Donate Now to make an on-line donation and indicate that your donation is intended to match the EHR challenge grant. Or, for more information, contact Gail Rosenberg at HowardCenter: 802.488.6912 or gailr@howardcenter.org.

Thank you on behalf of the people we serve.

Planned Gifts:

Ways to Support HowardCenter through Your Estate Plan (For more information about planned giving, please go to Leave a Legacy NH/VT by clicking here.)

Bequests

A will provision allows you to make a substantial contribution to HowardCenter without diminishing the assets available to you during your life. Since bequests are deductible from your taxable estate, significant estate tax savings may be possible. The following language is suggested when making an unrestricted bequest: “ I give (the sum of __ dollars) or (__ percent of the residuary of my estate) to HowardCenter, Burlington, Vermont, for its general corporate purposes.”

Retirement Plans

If you name HowardCenter as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, you also avoid income tax when HowardCenter receives its share of your plan.

Charitable Lead Trusts

You may support HowardCenter and other charities for a term of years or for the life of an individual by creating a charitable lead trust. Income will be paid to your fund at HowardCenter each year during the term of the trust. When the trust terminates, the assets in the trust revert to you or to individuals you wish to benefit.

Charitable Gift Annuity

In exchange for a gift of money or securities, HowardCenter will pay you and/or a loved one a fixed amount annually for the rest of your life. A portion of this income is not taxed, and you also receive a charitable deduction for part of your gift as calculated with IRS tables.

Real Estate with Retained Life Estate

A residence or other real property may be given as an outright gift, or you may prefer to give your residence, farm, or vacation home and retain the right to occupy it for life. You get a charitable deduction in the year you arrange your gift.

Charitable Remainder Trusts.

You may use an irrevocable trust to provide yourself and/or a loved one with a fixed annual income or an income which varies with the value of the trust. Part of your gift qualifies for an income tax deduction, as calculated with IRS tables. At the death of the last income beneficiary, the corpus of the trust is distributed to your fund at HowardCenter.

Life Insurance

When you give a life insurance policy to HowardCenter, the cash surrender value of the policy or the cost of a replacement policy is deductible as a charitable contribution. If you continue to pay premiums after your gift, these premiums are also deductible.

Special acknowledgment to The Vermont Community Foundation (VCF) for these definitions of a number of the most popular options individuals and couples are including in their estate plans. HowardCenter has a partnership agreement with VCF for charitable gift annuities and other life income gifts. This partnership gives us the opportunity to offer our supporters a vehicle through which they can receive income throughout their lives and benefit from tax savings.
